Maverick Carter has become one of the leading figures in the world of sports business and management. In 2021, he and his business partner LeBron James became the newest partners in the Fenway Sports Group. This makes them part owners of the $4.5 billion-worth Boston Red Sox, Premier League football club Liverpool FC, and several other sporting entities. Maverick Carter is known for bolstering LeBron’s image beyond the world of sports and making him a global entity. However, before his initial success story to become one of America’s biggest sporting celebrities, Carter admitted to having a dark past. He has been quite frank about his upbringing around crime related to drugs and gambling, according to the book LeBron James Inc.: Making of a Billion Dollar Athlete.
In the book, Brian Windhorst mentions Carter’s past and his dealing pot during high school. However, an intervention from his mother is what brought Carter to the right path, the one which brought him major success in today’s date.
Maverick Carter used to sell pot for a living in high school
The book by Brian Windhorst gives valuable insight into Maverick Carter’s past. His father was frequently jailed for crimes related to drugs. On top of that, his grandmother would run an all-night gambling club from their house. All these experiences had hardened a young Carter, who grew up around these adults and individuals.
His father inspired him a lot in his daily activities. He would notice his father Otis going to any extent to feed his family. Going further, he started dealing with pot during his teenage years. Brian Windhorst, in the book, wrote:
“When Carter was a teenager, he started selling pot. His mother, Katherine, found his stash in his jacket and hit the ceiling. She had graduated from the University of Akron, working her way through by going to night school and put in several decades as a social worker for the city of Akron. A hard worker and intelligent woman, she demanded that Carter straighten out his life or he’d end up like his father, in jail.”
Carter later went on to attend college on a sports scholarship. Although he was gifted in basketball as a teenager, he could not hit that same spark in college. This is where he used his knowledge and people management skills to gain experience and influence. Carter’s relationship with LeBron James and his chalking out every PR activity for the King has made the Lakers superstar the global entity he is today.
LeBron James and Maverick Carter chalked out incredible cohesion over their years of partnership
Although LeBron and Carter have known each other since they were kids, they officially partnered for business in 2006. He is one of the principal founders of the sports marketing company LRMR and played a crucial role in creating the ESPN documentary, The Decision.
Thanks to Carter, LeBron was able to secure a partial stake in Liverpool. This proved beneficial for his image beyond basketball. Alongside LeBron, Carter also founded SpringHill Entertainment which has several high-profile projects under its belt. In 2021, he became part owner of the $4.5 billion-worth MLB franchise Boston Red Sox, after becoming a partner at Fenway Sports Group.
