On Monday night, Aaron Rodgers posted a series of family photos to Instagram – five pictures featuring his mom Darla, his dad Ed, his brother Luke, and his niece – captioned simply, “Another bonding week”. For most athletes, that’s unremarkable. For Rodgers, it’s the most publicly meaningful thing he’s shared on social media in years.
The Steelers quarterback has been on Instagram since 2017. According to CBS Sports, this is the first time he has ever shared a photo of anyone in his family on the platform.
Rodgers had been estranged from his immediate family for more than a decade, with the rift tracing back to around 2014. The conflict went public in 2016 when his brother Jordan appeared on The Bachelorette and the family left two empty chairs at a dinner table to represent Aaron‘s absence – and that of his then-girlfriend Olivia Munn. It was a very public way to acknowledge a very private fracture.
Rodgers Appears To Have Reconciled With Family
The five Instagram photos were specific and personal. One showed Rodgers with his mother Darla.
One was with his father Ed. One photo featured his brother Luke, including a candid shot of the two of them assembling a toy together. The final photo showed Rodgers with his niece. Notably, brother Jordan was not included in any of the images.
Rodgers on the Family Rift – In His Own Words
In his 2024 Netflix documentary, Rodgers broke his long public silence on the estrangement. On the 2016 Bachelorette episode, he said: I was quiet about it, because I thought the best way to do it was not talk about it publicly. And what do they do? They go on a bullshit show and leave two empty chairs? They all agreed this was a good thing to do?
He also addressed the religious tension that divided the family: I grew up in a very white, dogmatic church, and that just didn’t really serve me. It was very rigid in structure. The relationship began to slowly thaw after the Jets traded for him in 2023. Per CBS Sports, citing a book by Ian O’Connor, Ed Rodgers traveled to Lake Tahoe in July 2023 to watch his son play in the American Century Championship golf tournament without telling him in advance.
Aaron spotted him, broke the ice, and the two spent time together. Both parents were later in the stands for his Jets debut – the game where he tore his Achilles on the fourth snap of the season. That painful chapter eventually led him to Pittsburgh, where he’ll play what he has called his final NFL season.
The photos arrive as Rodgers prepares to report to Steelers training camp on July 28 for his 22nd – and self-described last – NFL season. The timing feels intentional. He has said plainly that 2026 is it, and sharing these images now suggests he wants certain things settled before the curtain comes down on his playing career.
Brother Jordan Remains Absent
Jordan Rodgers‘ absence from the photos is worth noting. He wasn’t in the images, and given that their public conflict was the flashpoint that defined this entire story, that gap signals the reconciliation is still a work in progress – partial, not complete.
“Me and Aaron don’t really have that much of a relationship,” the sports commentator said back in 2016. “It’s just kind of the way he’s chosen to do life.”
“I choose to stay close with my family and my parents and my brother. It’s not ideal. I love him and I can’t imagine what it’s like to be in his shoes and the pressure he has… I don’t have hard feelings against him. It’s just how things go right now,” he added.
There’s also the matter of Rodgers‘ wife, whom he quietly married last year but has said very little about publicly. Whether she becomes part of these family moments is an open question.
All in all, Aaron Rodgers posting family photos for the first time in nearly a decade on social media is a genuine moment – not manufactured, not vague, and not easily dismissed. The caption was casual. The context was anything but.
