Sean McVay still doesn’t have anything new to share about Aaron Donald, and he made that clear again after the Los Angeles Rams beat the Chiefs in their preseason opener on Saturday. Donald, weighing a comeback after two years in retirement, remains the biggest lingering question mark on the Rams roster, and McVay isn’t rushing to answer it.
McVay has sounded increasingly upbeat about Donald’s potential return in recent weeks, but his tone shifted toward caution when reporters pressed him for specifics this time. There’s ongoing dialogue, there’s no deadline, and there’s still no decision.

The Latest ‘Update’
Asked directly for an update, McVay didn’t offer one.
“We have had great dialogue,” McVay said. “It’s going to be on his timeline, you know? And when he feels good about having clarity, whether that’s a yes or whether that ends up being a no, we’ve had some tentative discussions behind the scenes.”
McVay added that he doesn’t want to box Donald into a hard deadline, explaining there are only “loose” dates the two sides have floated internally. “What I don’t want to sit here and do is put a timeline on it, and then something comes up where I’ve got to kind of push it back,” he said. He was blunt about where things stand: “We’re not at that point quite yet.”
For now, the Rams are moving forward without him. McVay praised his current group for staying focused on the team “as it stands right now” rather than treating Donald’s decision as a distraction, a notable point given how often the subject comes up in his press conferences.

That steady approach mirrors how the coaching staff has handled other uncertainty this camp, including the recent update on Myles Garrett’s camp absence and roster questions like the one addressed in the Stetson Bennett QB2 discussion. McVay seems comfortable allowing things to play out rather than forcing anything.
