Jordan Poyer did not hold back when the topic turned to Jalen Hurts this week. The former Buffalo Bills safety, now working as an analyst, said that he would not trust the Eagles quarterback to lead a comeback when his team is down big late in a game.
Speaking on the NFL on CBS, Poyer made his stance clear while still crediting Hurts as a winner. The comment adds another log to a fire that has followed Hurts since last season’s disappointing playoff exit.
The Former Bill’s Blunt Assessment
Poyer set up his critique by acknowledging Philadelphia’s talent around Hurts before questioning the quarterback himself in crunch time.
“A quarterback in this league, your team is down 14 points with four minutes to go,” Poyer said. “Is Jalen Hurts somebody that you trust to bring your team back in the game? Their offense is good. Their offense is extremely good. Obviously, you got Saquon Barkley. You’ve got one of the best offensive lines in the game. Really good outside receivers. They got a really good defense. So Jalen doesn’t have to do a whole lot. But down 14 in a game, can Jalen bring his team back in the game?”
He added, “There’s gonna be moments in the season when you’re down 14, you’re gonna be down 10 with 2 minutes to go, 3 minutes to go. You’re gonna have to make some throws. In those moments, can Jalen make those throws? … Me? I don’t know. He’s not somebody that I would trust down 14 to bring my team back in the game. But, again, I’m not gonna sit here and hate on Jalen, because all he’s done is win.”
Why Hurts’ Trustworthiness is Now a Debate
Hurts enters his seventh season in Philadelphia, coming off a year that ended with a wild-card loss to the 49ers, a stunning collapse for a team that had won the Super Bowl the previous season. He threw for 3,224 yards and 25 touchdowns with six interceptions, but he also took 32 sacks, a number that keeps fueling questions about his ability to process complex coverages under pressure.

Those numbers are part of why the leadership and decision-making conversation around Hurts has never fully gone away, even with a championship on his résumé. It’s also why the Eagles’ locker-room dynamics have drawn scrutiny, including the fallout that led to A.J. Brown’s trade to the Patriots this offseason.
The real test for Philadelphia isn’t a CBS panel discussion, it’s the regular season. If the Eagles find themselves in multiple double-digit holes with the clock working against them, Hurts will get every opportunity to answer Poyer directly on the field.
Philadelphia opens the regular season on Sept. 13 against Washington, giving Hurts an immediate chance to prove himself.
