The Jacksonville Jaguars have acquired quarterback Quinn Ewers from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a sixth-round selection in the 2028 NFL Draft. The Dolphins then traded the draft pick for Kyle McCord of the Green Bay Packers.

The deal gives Jacksonville another quarterback option as it prepares for the regular season. Ewers was drafted by Miami in the seventh round in 2025 after playing at Texas. He made three starts as a rookie, completing 66.3% of his passes for 622 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

Why Ewers Was Expendable in Miami

Miami’s decision to trade Ewers comes after a short tenure with the club. The move is a roster decision made close to the league’s cutdown deadline, when teams are finalizing their available depth and weighing short-term needs against longer-term development.

Miami’s front office had concerns about Ewers’ training-camp performance and although some staff believed he had potential, the team made the decision to trade the 23 year-old to the Jaguars.

The Dolphins splashed out ahead of the new season, signing De’Von Achane to a four-year, $64 million contract extension. That makes Achane the third highest paid running back in the league.

Jacksonville’s Quarterback Room

For Jacksonville, the acquisition adds Ewers to a room led by Trevor Lawrence. The Jaguars’ immediate task is to decide how Ewers fits into their final roster construction before the season begins.

Ewers is a depth addition rather than a declared change at the top of Jacksonville’s quarterback order. His arrival nevertheless gives the Jaguars another young player to evaluate as roster decisions approach.

Jacksonville General Manager James Gladstone said he analyzed Ewers’ performances as a rookie and “felt good enough about the upward trajectory and really what he showcased over the course of those performances.”

He says the move came to life on Saturday and it did not take long to reach an agreement with the Dolphins.

Dolphins Replace Ewers With McCord

Following the trade with the Jaguars, the Dolphins moved quickly to acquire McCord as their back-up quarterback.

McCord threw four touchdown passes inlast week’s Packers win over the Arizona Cardinals, helping the team to a comeback down 11 points in a 42-38 victory.

“I did everything that I could’ve to make a case for myself,” the former Syracuse player said following the performance.

Jordan Love said he was excited for McCord, adding that the move gives the 23-year-old a “great opportunity” to keep his career moving forward.

With both 23-year-old quarterbacks acting as backups in Florida, the future will tell us who made the better trade.
