Dianna Russini, one of the most prominent NFL reporters in the country, resigned from The Athletic on April 14 after photos of her with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel at an Arizona luxury resort set off a week of escalating scrutiny and an internal investigation at the New York Times-owned outlet.

The resignation came less than a week after Page Six published the photos on April 7. They showed Russini and Vrabel at the Ambiente hotel in Sedona, poolside, in a hot tub, on a rooftop deck, hugging, and with hands interlocked. Both are married to other people. The photos were taken before the NFL owners’ meetings, which began in Phoenix on March 29.

How This Situation Unfolded

The initial response from The Athletic was defensive. Executive editor Steven Ginsberg described the photos as “misleading” and lacking “essential context,” adding that they depicted “public interactions in front of many people.” He called Russini a “premier journalist” and said the outlet was proud to have her.

That position did not hold. Front Office Sports reported on the story, fueling wider media attention. The New York Times reported on April 11 that The Athletic had opened a formal investigation into Russini’s conduct. The scrutiny continued to build. By April 14, Russini had submitted her resignation.

In a letter to Ginsberg posted publicly on X, Russini said she stood behind every story she had ever published and framed her exit as a decision made with “clarity about what is right for me, my family, and the work I have spent my career building.” She described the media commentary that followed the photos as “self-feeding speculation that is simply unmoored from the facts.”

Ginsberg’s note to staff acknowledged the outlet’s shifting stance. “When this situation was brought to our attention last week, there were clear concerns, but we received a detailed explanation, and it was our instinct to support and defend a colleague while we continued to review the matter,” he wrote. “As additional information emerged, new questions were raised that became part of our investigation. While our investigation into Dianna’s conduct was ongoing, she chose to resign.” He confirmed the review of Russini’s work would continue even after her departure.

Both Deny Wrongdoing

Russini said the photos did not represent what they appeared to show, noting that six people were present during the day. Vrabel was equally direct in his denial. “These photos show a completely innocent interaction and any suggestion otherwise is laughable,” he told Page Six. “This doesn’t deserve any further response.”

Vrabel is preparing for his second season as Patriots head coach. He led New England to a 14-3 record last season before a Super Bowl loss to Seattle and was named AP NFL Coach of the Year. He previously won the same award with Tennessee in 2021 and won three Super Bowls as a player with the Patriots.

A Career Built on NFL Access

Russini joined The Athletic in 2023 after nearly a decade at ESPN, where she had worked as a SportsCenter anchor, NFL analyst, and insider. At The Athletic, she hosted a podcast and appeared regularly on the outlet’s video platform, establishing herself as one of the most connected reporters in the league. Her contract was reportedly set to expire within a few months of her resignation.

The episode cuts to a persistent tension in national NFL coverage: the relationship between journalists and their sources. NFL reporters depend on access to coaches, front office staff, and players in ways that inevitably blur professional and social lines. The standard expectation is that those relationships remain clearly bounded. When they appear not to, the reporter’s credibility becomes part of the story regardless of whether any misconduct occurred.

Russini’s resignation does not answer the questions The Athletic’s investigation raised. The review of her conduct is ongoing. What it does confirm is that the photos and the week of coverage that followed made her position at the outlet untenable.
