The Minnesota Vikings are hosting former 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings for a two-day free agent visit, per Adam Schefter.

The best receiver still on the market has a destination. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Tuesday that former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings is visiting the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday night and Wednesday as both sides explore a potential fit. The two-day format signals genuine mutual interest rather than a courtesy meeting.

Minnesota did not draft a single wide receiver across nine picks in the 2026 NFL Draft last weekend. This visit is the direct consequence of that decision.

Why the Vikings Need Him

The receiver room in Minnesota looks very different from what it did a year ago. Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison remain locked in as the top two options, and the Vikings exercised Addison’s fifth-year option earlier this offseason. But below that tandem, the cupboard is nearly bare.

Jalen Nailor, who tied for the team lead with four receiving touchdowns in 2025, signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency in March on a three-year, $35 million deal. The Vikings’ answer to that departure was Tai Felton, a third-round pick from 2025 who totaled three receptions in his rookie season. That is not a depth chart ready to handle a playoff push.

Minnesota passed on addressing the position in the draft despite having nine picks available. That puts the pressure squarely on free agency to find a viable third receiver. Jennings is the best option still on the market by a wide margin. Pro Football Rumors ranks him as the No. 18 free agent remaining and the only player in the top 45 still unsigned.

Who Jennings Is

Jennings spent six seasons in San Francisco after the 49ers selected him in the seventh round of the 2020 draft out of Tennessee. He earned the nickname “Third-and-Jauan” during his time with the 49ers for his ability to convert on third down, a trait that speaks to both his route-running precision and his willingness to work in contested-catch situations.

He posted career bests across the board last season, catching 55 passes for 643 yards and a team-leading nine touchdowns. Over five full seasons in San Francisco, he accumulated 210 receptions for 2,581 yards and 22 touchdowns. He is also regarded as a legitimate run blocker, which matters in a Kevin O’Connell offense that asks receivers to contribute in multiple phases.

San Francisco signed veteran wideout Mike Evans to a three-year, $60.4 million contract early this offseason, effectively closing the door on a Jennings return. He has been a free agent since March, and the market has been slower to materialize than his production would suggest. The general read is that his asking price is misaligned with what teams are willing to offer, and that a one-year prove-it deal in the $8 million range is the most realistic outcome.

Why Minnesota Makes Sense

The schematic overlap is real. O’Connell’s offense traces its roots to Sean McVay’s system in Los Angeles, and Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers offense shares significant DNA with that same coaching tree. Jennings has run these route concepts and worked from these alignments for six years. The acclimation period for him in Minnesota would be shorter than it would be almost anywhere else.

Sam Darnold, who re-signed with the Vikings this offseason, is also familiar with the schematic similarities through his own experience. Having a receiver who understands the system’s timing and spacing requirements without needing a lengthy adjustment period is valuable for a team trying to win now.

The one area of uncertainty is role clarity. With Jefferson consuming the bulk of targets and Addison entrenched as the clear second option, Jennings would be operating as a WR3 in Minnesota. That is a step back from his usage in San Francisco, particularly in a season where he led the team in touchdowns. Whether he is comfortable accepting that role on a short-term deal, or whether a team willing to offer him a larger role wins out, remains the central question coming out of this visit.

The Miami Dolphins have also been linked to Jennings, giving him options as he tests the market. He is not expected to rush a decision, and further visits are possible before he signs.
