The Miami Dolphins have signed De’Von Achane to a four-year, $64 million contract extension, making him the third-highest-paid running back in the NFL as the first major move of general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan’s tenure.
The deal includes $32 million in guaranteed money, with bonuses that could push the total value to $68 million. At $16 million per year in average annual value, Achane slots behind only Saquon Barkley ($20.6M) and Christian McCaffrey ($19M) among all running backs in the league. The extension keeps him in South Florida through the 2030 season.
The deal confirms what NFL insiders had been predicting all offseason: that Achane, along with Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs, was positioned to reset the running back market. Miami made sure he was the first one to get a deal done.
Why Miami Paid Now
Achane was entering the final year of his rookie deal heading into 2026, which gave both sides real urgency. Sullivan made clear before the draft that Achane was not available in trade talks, publicly calling him a cornerstone of what the Dolphins are building.
Miami’s offseason matters here, too. The Dolphins shed veterans and accepted significant dead money to get younger and cheaper across the roster. Locking in Achane at $16 million per year while the market for his position was actively rising made sense. Sullivan restructured left tackle Terron Armstead‘s deal in March to free up cap space, in part to fund exactly this kind of signing.
Production Got Him Paid
Achane rushed for a career-high 1,350 yards in 2025, added 15 rushing touchdowns, and earned his first Pro Bowl selection. Since entering the league in 2023 as a third-round pick out of Texas A&M, he leads all qualified running backs with 5.6 yards per carry.
The receiving production is what separates him from a one-dimensional running back. Achane has 172 receptions and 13 receiving touchdowns across his first three seasons. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, he has recorded seven rushing touchdowns at or above 20 mph since 2023, second only to Barkley’s nine.
Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley made the case plainly in March: “He’s dynamic. I mean, there’s plays that you’re not even blocked right for and he gets 6 or 7 yards. His vision, his acceleration, the way he can catch the ball out of the backfield, he’s so hard to defend.”

What This Means for the RB Market
Achane is the latest in a wave of running back extensions reshaping how the position is valued. Travis Etienne Jr., Breece Hall, and Kenneth Walker III have signed deals worth $48 million, $45.75 million, and $43 million, respectively, this offseason.
Achane’s $64 million deal cleared all of them. Robinson and Gibbs are next. Miami’s extension will function as a market precedent for both negotiations.
